Death Cab For Cutie

I've been giving their new album Narrow Stairs a few spins and am slowly getting into it. Nothing can ever come near the brilliance that was Transatlanticism though. Plans was ok too.
In a few months they'll be at Enmore Theatre.
I've tried my best not to obsess over shooting gigs but it's going to be hard to act professional at this show.
Can I just obsess over one more show?

Latest gigs: Mere Theory @ Annandale Hotel, Come Together @ Luna Park, End of Fashion @ Annandale Hotel, Wolf & Cub @ Annandale Hotel, The Black Keys @ Manning Bar, Grand Fatal @ The Sando, The Mars Volta @ Horden Pavillion and Death Cab For Cutie @ Enmore Theatre.

Oh yeah, I said some things about a few bands that I have known that may have offended some people. I'm sorry I was frustrated. It was a frustration that had been building for over two years. But I shouldn't have published it online.

Some news

I missed out on shooting Gyroscope. No confirmation and I felt a bit ill. A bit of a downer because I've been trying to photograph these guys for two years and they are one of my favourite Australian bands.
Not all is bad however because an Arts Centre in my town (well, a 313 media training building) want to display some of my photographs on canvasses. I'll have a couple near the stairs and outside the classrooms and up to 8 in the recording studio. So, now I'm on an assignment to take the best photos possible to be displayed. One of the prints will be a silouette of Geoff Rickly of Thursday fame in the crowd at Soundwave '08.

Stay tuned for some more photos, either samples of the prints or more gig photos.

Playing the waitin' game

I was quite suprised at the amount of attention my A7X photos got. I suppose it makes sense that a band that had a soldout show in Horden Pavillion would have some fans.

I'm still waiting for my confirmation to shoot Gyroscope. It's only at The Metro but this is one band I've been dying to shoot since the last time I shot them in July 2006.
I already have a backup show planned to go to. This one is at Spectrum. The band is a great local indie band called The Retreat. I need to get out of the house so this will be the first show I've paid to get into for awhile.

Splendour in the Grass

It's one the biggest festivals that the indie kids won't stop talking about. I had to turn down an offer to shoot it and naturally I asked for Come Together instead.
I don't really want to travel 9/10/12/20 hrs or however long it takes to get there.
I'm still quite suprised that I was asked. I think I might apply for The Big Day Out next year.
Okay, maybe Taste of Chaos in October.

A7X / BFMV/ Atreyu

There wasn't a lot of gigs coming up so I applied for what was available. I was pretty sure I wouldn't get in but I heard back from my editor in less than a day.

I went to Horden Pavillion to photograph Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine and Atreyu.

I would have never given those bands the time of day before but they all put on great sets. Bullet would have been my favourite of the night followed by Atreyu. Sorry A7X but you just ain't doing it for me. They were great to photograph though.

I missed Behind Crimson Eyes because I got there late. Who puts a band on at 6:30? Damn all ages gigs. I'm used to bands starting at 8/8:30pm. I did get to catch up with Josh and Garth from the band though. It would have been the 5th time I'd seen them. We go way back.

I'm not sure why I have avoided The Horden for so long. It's a huge venue with lighting good enough to get some great shots. Good news is that The Mars Volta will play there in a couple of months so I'll be back.

My next gig to shoot is Gyroscope and maybe Kisschasy. In June it's back to Annandale Hotel for End of Fashion and Wolf & Cub. I'm going to miss being in front of the barrier, but there shouldn't be too much pushing and shoving at those shows.

Here's some photos:

Rocket Science at Annandale Hotel

On friday I got a call from Matt from The Dwarf asking if I could take photos of Rocket Science at Annandale Hotel. I was already on my way to Sydney to shoot my friends band The Stray Assembley, so I agreed to shoot the Rocket Science gig and review it.

It was a fun night. A few of my friends were there and I met a few people from bands. I could've sworn I saw The City Lights and You Am I there. I was also drinking, so I couldn't tell what was real or my imagination.

I'll add a few more photos to my flickr page and there will be a huge gallery on www.thedwarf.com.au.

I've got to write the review now and nervously bite my nails while I wait for the confirmation from Blue Murder about the Avenged Sevenfold gig.

The Stray Assembly

My friends The Stray Assembly played their second show at Candy's Apartment in Kings Cross. I decided to go along and take photos of them instead of going to shoot The Mess Hall at Gaelic Theatre.
It was my first time at Candy's. It was a nice little venue with very low lighting. It was a external flash and 50mm f/1.8 type of night. I prefer better lighting but sometimes you've just got to put up with these things.
I'll add some photos later. I'm off to Annandale Hotel again to shoot Rocket Science, so I'll add some photos up here of them too.
Then I've got Avenged Sevenfold to shoot next wednesday, but they'll be getting their own post.
Stay tuned.
